Something similar to a Schilke 51

Hi all
My current mouthpiece is a schilke 51.
I am very happy with it. The sensations in my mouth, the sound. The only thing is that I find that it is a bit demanding for me.
So I would like to try a mouthpiece that has all the good sensations of the schilke 51 but that is a little less demanding.
The C4 is not even similar. It is much more superficial and feels much smaller.
Any ideas?

Thank you all

Maybe write a message to Karl Hammond and tell him what you want that's different from a Schilke. He used to be their mouthpiece guy until he went out on his own. He'd know more about the 51 than just about anybody, I'm guessing.

51's are typically a bit larger than their specs would indicate. In my stuff I'd suggest trying XT 102, G, G8 or H, H8.
But if you want a more valid recommendation maybe I can see you on Skype.

Try a Bach 5GS

How does a Schilke 51 compare with a Bach 5G? (I always thought the Schilke was bigger and deeper than the Bach, with a bit more of a cup).

Have you tried a Schilke 51B? Or an M5.1 ? They're both "off-the-shelf" mouthpieces, so you might have an easier time finding one to try. If one of them works, great. If not, you can just move on...

This may be urban legend, but I think the 51 is a copy of Ralph Sauer's favorite 5G.

The obvious choice would be a Hammond 12ML, Karl’s take on a 51, although “less demanding” I don’t know.

I’ve heard that the 51 was a copy of RS’s mpc. I don’t know if RS’s mpc was a Bach 5G though.

The 12ML is shallower and doesn't play anything like a 51 IMO. The custom 12MXL is probably the goldilocks version of a Hammond closest to the 51.

I asked Hammond about what model was closest to a Schilke 51. The reply was “12ML all day long”.

The specs are the most similar, I agree... but the 12ML plays much smaller than it is, IMO. And the L is deeper by a lot than the 51.

I recommend that you speak with Dave Harrison at Wedge Mouthpieces about a Wedge 5GS.
