Schilke 51 vs. Hammond 12ML

Post by Bach5G »

Has anyone directly compared these two mouthpieces? Thoughts?

51 is deeper by a bit. The Hammond has a more open throat. Personally, I find the Hammond to be a little shallow and bright in that depth, and the 51 is a very good mouthpiece by itself.

The closest Hammond to the 51 (IMO) would be a custom 12MXL.

I’ve tried both the Schilke and the Hammond. I agree with burgerbob about the Schilke being deeper than the Hammond. I didn’t like the Hammond (probably because it was too shallow), but the Schilke is my main tenor mouthpiece. For comparison, The Schilke is closer to a 5G mouthpiece IMO.

For some reason the 12M (which is more shallow) and the 12MXL (which is deeper) gives a fuller sound than the 12ML on my .525 horns. I have no clue why, but I use a large shank 12ML and 12MXL on my .547 horns and there I think both works. I haven't tried a Schilke 51.
