What size is this? I understand (please confirm or correct) that Dixon was an educator in Texas that had a Schilke mouthpiece model that was sold at local, Texas, music stores. I'm interested in any other information on it.

I'm currently using it on my small bore horns and I'm thinking of using it as a starting point for a DE setup. Thinking I'd like a little larger rim and slightly shallower cup than this. Other pieces I have seem too small, Schilke 46, 47, 47B (my 51 is loaned out, so I can't try that). I've got a Conn 3 that's loaned out too or if try that more. My Conn 2 (and a CORP12C clearly) feels too small. I was guessing I might like something comparable to a 51B if there was such a thing, with DE there is! Right?

I'd heard the same story about Dixon, and why this mouthpiece was popular in Texas. I obtained one a while ago. As far as I can tell, it is essentially identical to a Schilke 50: Cup I.D. ~25.40mm, throat 6.75mm. This makes it pretty similar to a Bach 6½AL and a Yamaha 48; also resembles a Denis Wick 6BS (but a different rim shape). For me, it's a good mouthpiece for a 0.508" or perhaps a 0.500" bore trombone.

The Conn 3 is smaller - 25.00" cup I.D, 6.35 mm throat, so it's more like a Denis Wick 9BS or perhaps (with smaller throats) a Schilke 47, or a Bach 6¾C.

The Schilke 51B is a strange beast, not at all part of the semi-logical Schilke progressive numbering system. (Also obvious outliers - the Schilke 47B and 45B.) The 51B has a shallower cup than a 50 or 51, and a smaller throat. I've never been happy with a Schilke 51B in large or small shank.

I have one in my collection. It measures between my 100 and 101.

I can say with a fair amount of confidence that the Dixon is a Bach 6 1/2AL cut into a Schilke blank. Yes, it is similar to a Schilke 50, but my two 50's feel the just the slightest bit bigger and sharper at the inner edge. The Dixon and 6 1/2 feel exactly the same.

Thanks for the info about the Schilke Dixon, and its similarity to a Bach 6½AL.
These differences are subtle, but real.
This mouthpiece should also work well on a medium-bore trombone.

I have an extra 51B that might be worth considering in your quest for mouthpieces. Slightly wider cup than the 6.5AL.
