Smash Or Pass?

Santa leaked that he wants to bring me this for Xmas. I like it, but was told by others that this was "ugly," "gaudy," and "stupid." Your thoughts?

faux croc is charmingly preposterous (tends not to wear/age well...) but the cream doesn't really work here pour moi

Well, you like it, and in the final analysis it is your trombone that's going to go inside it.
It sounds to me like Santa knows your personal taste and preferences pretty well. It isn't what I would ask Santa to bring me, but my trombone isn't going in it.
Since you like it, be sure to be extra nice to Santa for hearing that you wanted an MB-F bass case and for knowing your tastes well enough to get you exactly the right version of the MB-F.
BTW, MB bass cases may be the best bass trombone cases on the market. They are small (mine is really scarcely larger than my MB Soft tenor trombone case) and they are not heavy. (I can't in good conscience say 'They are light', because it's built to hold a bass trombone, after all!) I love mine (Royal blue cordura with black trim. It's beautimous, even if I have to say so myself), and I'm sure you'll love yours.
Merry Christmas!

I don't actually have a color preference. I'm not sure what I think about this one.

Probably not too many like it so it should be to find in the case pile backstage. Gaudy doesn't enter the discussion if you aren't stashing it on stage.
I'm more of a latch case type of guy, but zipper cases are pretty popular right now.
Thank Santa a bunch.

Having an easily recognizable case in backstage storage can be a good thing.

Don't need to. Just this.

It's OK, I'd like it better if the alligator look was all over; not crazy about the cream along the top.

I would get it
. There are to many plain black cases anyway. I have ordered a custom bonna with 3 colors a month ago. Will post in 6 months or so

I would go with "flashy" rather than gaudy. As a practical matter, it will always be easy for you to immediately identify among all of the mundane and lesser cases. Especially useful if you have extra mags for the Thompson.
(I'm assuming it's genuine/natural. If it's faux, I wouldn't go for it.)

I like the colorway, brown and cream works well. Don't like the gator texture though.

Ostrich would be quite nice, but I don't think you can beat the gator for durability.

Traditionally those went into violin or viola cases, though I have seen references to trombone cases in literature of the era.
You'll need to move a little ways east (over the Nevada state line) if you want to own a real one, though.

Robert Shaw used one in
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. Different gun, though.

You need to break it down to get it in a viola case. I think the bass trombone case might hold it fine fully assembled (though that barrel is pretty long). Maybe even with the mag attached.

Both true, but Bonna doesn't use exotic leathers. That's embossed cow-hide, not any sort of crocodilian.
I don't want to think about what a full-quill ostrich leather trombone case would cost.
About 20 years ago a friend of mine purchased an older Paxman horn from the UK. It came in its original case. Mike was surprised when he saw the case--it was illegal to import the case into the US under the CITES treaty. It was crocodile leather, but the customs inspector apparently didn't know what he was looking at.

If that is real crocodile leather ... Not only is that gaudy as all get out, but then it's also a pointless waste of a crocodile.
The crocodile needs that to keep its insides, you know, inside.
But assuming it's fake ...then not only is that fake gaudy as all get out leather, it comes looking worn out and crumpled when it's brand new.
Hard pass.

Not a reptile expert, but I was assuming it was alligator (or faux alligator).

Iām using this as inspiration for when I finally get a MB double case: only with brown leather instead of the faux skin.

Website just says "crocodile" as an option for color. "The more you know"
https://houghtonhorns.com/products/marc ... 1747141878
That's also an insanely expensive case.

Especially if it's faux. Maybe the faux-crocs are endangered, though I don't see them on the list. Perhaps they're just difficult to breed.

Great movie! And great twelve-tone theme.
