Schilke 51C4

I have been trying this mouthpiece and there are a lot of things I really love about it, but the rim is too sharp and uncomfortable. Does anyone know what this mouthpiece would translate to in Greg Black or Griego terms? If I wanted to order the closest thing that Greg Black or Griego offers to this mouthpiece what would they be? Seems around a size 5 rim with a pretty shallow cup and small throat.

Not an answer to your question but I was interested in a 51C4. Due to a misunderstanding, I ended up getting my DE LT E8/E4 setup back from a purchaser. Spec-wise it is roughly similar to the 51C4. I’m finding it very much to my liking. The DE Lexan 102 rim doesn’t have that sharp edge. Of course, Doug offers several rim profiles.

I don’t know how closely they compare to the Schilkes, but I’ve played both the small and large shank Yamaha 51C4 pieces and was impressed, particularly with the small shank version. The rims were more comfy than any Schilke I’ve played.

I’m not sure about the Griego line, but in Greg Black I would guess around a 5GS or 5AL would get you in the ballpark, and you could play around with different blank weights to dial in the response and sound.

Not what you seeking but what about a Schilke 51C (standard rim). Probably a custom order but they evidently offer such a mouthpiece.

Send the mouthpiece to Bob Reeves and have it threaded for whatever the closest DE series is to the cup (at depth). It cost $50 last time I did it. If they have to replate the cup (say they need to widen it a hair), that's another $50. They can also just modify the existing rim contour, but that is probably more of a gamble

They are great! It will be much much closer to the schilke than some "equivalent" from another maker, because they will retain the cup contour, shoulder, and obviously the blank, throat/bore, and shank dimensions.

I just realized this would be a standard 51. So definitely not a custom order.

Rusty, a Yamaha 51C4 is slightly smaller than the Schilke 51C4, which might be good or bad. A Yamaha 51 straight is slightly larger than a Schilker 51C4, and has a slightly rounder inner rim. It might be what the OP seeks. .. and it is cheap to test. Happy mouthpiece hunting. ..

I had this exact issue many moons ago.
Had the 51C4 rim cut off and threaded (for a favorite 5G rim), it works really well.
There are other pieces that get kind of close, but not quite the same.
The closest that I've played out of the box was a Parke, don't remember all of the numbers.
Can also vouch for Reeves' work, top notch mouthpieces and custom threading!
Some DE parts get close but not quite the same feel for me.
