Yamaha YBL-830G

Anyone ever owned or played the Yamaha YBL-830G? I’ve played the yellow version and was not a fan. Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

I played one at ITF- never seen one anywhere else. It played just like the other 830s, bit different sound. The screwbell 835D and 835GD(I think there was one of these- gold bell with screwbell) were just so much better that I didn't spend much time on the non-screwbell versions.
If it's any indication, they're so good that Tomer Maschkowski developed it and the 835 and promptly went back to Bach.

I think I'm misreading this. So if the 835 is that good why did Tomer go back to Bach?

You're not misreading it, Bill. If you look at Tomer's social media, you can see him with the Yamaha in June and July of this year, and then in September announcing he is a Bach artist. I've certainly tried an instrument for a while and thought it was the answer, only to go back to what I knew. I'm in the middle of it right now...
There is an 835G at Virtuosity in Boston right now. They have it as a demo, so it's not on the wall, but they'll pull it out for you if you ask. It responds nicely (and it doesn't swallow mouthpieces too far like the 830), but the sound and feedback are not for me. Sort of hollow for me and the way I play.

Thanks Gabe. Was unaware of the situation regarding Tomer. Yamahas always seem to have that immediate wow factor and then.... Someone once told me that the best Yamaha bass trombone he ever played was a 613H with a Bach 50 NS playing slide. I know his playing well and was surprised that he told me this but evidentially the sound was just what he always hears in his head. Go figure.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I have just heard a (potentially humorous) rumor that when Tomer was in Thailand in July-August 2023 as an artist and lecturer for Thailand International Trombone Festival, he tried the horn of one of the professor at the university that host the festival, a Shires with retrofitted Bach Mt Vernon bell, and was so impressed that he went to Bach
I have tried that horn once, good sound but not my cup of tea. Then again if I like it I would not have ordered the 835D
