big Olds mouthpiece
Hello everyone one,
I have a very old trombone, customized by LA SAX. It came with an Olds 3 mouthpiece. However, I'm playing something similar to a bach 4 on my Shires, so the difference is very notable.
Is there a modern manufacturer who is making mouthpiece with old shanks ? I'd like to have something closer to a 6 1/2. And if there isn't, do you know an old mouthpiece I would look for ?
Thank you very much.
Valentin

Is the trombone an Olds? I make shanks to fit those old smaller receivers. And you can have the "similar to a bach 4" rim on a shallower cup like a 6-1/2. That's actually what I play on myself. Do you know the bore size of the horn? Dual bore?

Thank you for you answer.
Your solution might be perfect for me. Can I buy one ?

I don't know what the trombone is... from the informations I have gathered, LA Sax was only customizing instruments, but there is no other inscription on it.

Re: big Olds mouthpiece
This "interesting" trombone was definitely not made by Olds. I'm not familiar with LA SAX.
A bit mysterious why it was shipped with an Olds 3 mouthpiece, whose application is pretty specific to small-bore Olds tenor trombones. (Those mouthpieces have smaller diameter shanks that mate with only Olds trombone receivers.)
Does your Olds 3 mouthpiece fit snugly into the trombone's receiver? If so, you are in luck, because Doug Elliott can indeed provide you with a Shank that fits your trombone and a variety of Cup and Rim sizes that will suite your face and your playing style. Consult with him about your options - you'll be pleased!

You've got me curious. Any chance you could post a couple more pictures?

The picture you posted does not look like any Olds model.
LA Sax was noted for colored lacquer, particularly black. I'm sure they modified some other maker's instrument and then put their own label on it. Yours looks somewhat like a Bach TB-300.
Note to John: picture cite at the bottom of his 2nd post.

It's probably a standard small shank receiver. Just happened to come with an Olds mouthpiece

Woulda helped if I hadn't left out the word "more", wouldn't it?
Based on the initial post, I was thinking it might be something from the early 20th century; lots of them have undersize mouthpiece receivers. It doesn't look nearly that old.
So - how far does a standard shank mouthpiece go into the receiver?

I would guess that horn is made in China and customized here

Wow, lot's of answers, thank you
I don't have the horn with me, but I'll post more pictures when I can.

A modern shank mouthpiece does't fit correctly, witch is leading me to think it is quite old. The Olds mouthpiece fits much better than a modern mouthpiece, but it is not perfect.
I have tried and literally burnt lot's of chineese trombone, if this one is one, it is way better than all those I have had before.

It's a small shank trombone. The mouthpiece from a Bach 42 won't fit. The mouthpiece for a Bach 36 will.
