34mm cup depth for bass trombone?

Post by AlexBassBone »

Hello! I'm new here, I'm writing this post to ask if there's anyone out there who can give their opinion.

I had always played with very deep cups and large and wide bores, but for a few months now I have been playing with a 34mm deep and 7'5 bore mouthpiece and I am super happy.

What is the minimum cup depth you think is appropriate for bass trombone? Think 34mm is too shallow?

Thank you all! :good:

How is "cup depth" measured? I've never quite understood this spec. Not all manufacturers give this info.

Hi! so in theory it is measured from the rim to where the bore begins to open.

There is no minimum and maximum allowed depth, there are just ones that typically sound worse and some that typically sound better. I would be curious to know what piece you are using

Well yes, in the end it's something subjective... I really like it at the moment.

It is a modular mouthpiece from Romera Brass, Catalonia (Spain) :hi:

Ok. Well, for me, that might be a bit deep. However shape and a million other factors play into it.

34mm isn't outside the realm of possibility, even in that diameter. For instance, going off Giddings' spec sheet, the Adriano (id 27.83mm) has a cup depth of 36.7mm. That's deeper than the specs for the Nor'Easter (34.16mm depth with a 29.06mm diameter).

To me, specifying "cup depth" that way is absurd.
If the throat is higher or lower but everything else is the same, those are different cup depths?
