Greg Black AL Mouthpieces

Post by norbie2018 »

I'm curious about the 3AL large shank. Does anyone have experience with this series and how they play?

I've used Greg's AL cup mouthpieces on my smaller horns, and on my large horn for getting a more "commercial" sound out of it. The large shank version can be great if you play in orchestras where there is occasionally a Pops-style encore on an otherwise Classical concert - you can get by without bringing a smaller horn. The small shank versions I found were a little better on .525 bore horns than .508, although you might find that you like them for both. They have an open feel that is good, but I found that I sometimes fell into playing my small bore horn with a bit too much large bore air. If you're careful, they play great.
