buying a new TV - what features?

I need to replace the tv my family watches. A 40 or 43 fits that room well, anything bigger would be too much.
We looked at what's available in the local Walmart. The "smart" tvs in the lower price range are all Roku. The family watches a lot of netflix, hulu, etc.
Some of the reviews were a little harsh about Roku performance on the tvs.
4K tvs in that size run about $250-$300, which is amazing really. Or 1080 for $100 less.
Then there seems to be another range in the $100 - $150 more.
So looking for thoughts from the technology wizards here. Buy cheap, or is there value to a little higher? Roku or not?
