I had not heard of Mr. East until last night when I stumbled across this YouTube video last night:

Heavy, heavy hitter from LA, it turns out. Very well known in bass circles. Effortless chops and he exudes such joy in his playing.

I am wondering if it’s possible to bring a bit of that into my own (trombone) playing? There’s something there to aim for, I think.

Glad that you have "discovered" him. Nathan East is the best bassist I have ever heard live, and certainly in the top echelon of bass players worldwide. I'll never forget the concert where I heard him - Fourplay (Bob James, Larry Carlton, Harvey Mason, and East), all at the top of their game. :good:

At that concert, I decided that Larry Carlton was an even better blues guitarist than Eric Clapton; it's ironic to me that in the NAMM video, Nathan is wearing an Eric Clapton baseball cap!

Check out Fourplay and any other recordings of Nathan East (even though they can't capture the in-person experience of his soloing). You'll be a fan!

Not so ironic: Nathan tours and records with Clapton.

Slowhand makes a cameo on Nathan’s Nathan East, 2014.
