I am discovering trombone jazz artists and working through artists I like, which got me thinking.....what do you consider to be the definitive jazz trombone albums someone should collect/listen to?

I really like the tone of J.J. Johnson (and other's in that same vein). J is for Jazz is an album I've been digesting a lot lately.

My jazz taste is Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Coltrane, Lyle Ritz (jazz ukulele) etc.

What is your definitive list of jazz albums with trombone as prominent instrument that people should check out?

The Incredible Kai Winding Trombones (1961) came up recently on this forum.

In addition to Kai, nice work from P Faulise and Tony Studd. Bill Evans shows up on piano for a few cuts.

Check out some of the albums that feature multiple trombonists. 'Trombones Inc.', 'Trombone Scene' and '3 Bones and Quill' come to mind. More recent ones too, like Steve Turre's One4J and Slide Hampton's Spirit of the Moon and World of Trombones.

Jim Pugh - "Pugh Taylor Project 1"; EnJ "Legend and Lion"
Bob Brookmeyer - 'Paris Suite'; 'Bob Brookmeyer and Friends'; 'The Power of Positive Swinging'
Hal Crooks - 'Only Human'

JJ Johnson and Al Grey: Things Are Getting Better All the Time.

I always felt like this was a hidden gem. Both players at the top of their game, and JJ looser than usual. (Feels like Al Grey had a good influence on him.)

"Definitive" is a pretty strong word, but check out Dicky Wells' playing with Count Basie's earlier bands--the Decca recordings. There's tons of remasters and repackages of these things, so they're pretty easy to find. "Dicky's Dream" and "Taxi War Dance" are great solos.

For me it has always been this one. I happen to have the LP but it's pretty rare. Absolutely unbelievable playing by everybody on the album.

I haven't listened to this in probably 30 years or more but right now I can't stop.

I wish Dick had paired Clark and Carl on a track. Those guys could put more junk a ball than just about anybody.

I listened to Clark and Bob Brookmeyer's The Power of Positive Swinging over and over when I first found it. Again, "definitive" is a strong word, but it's very much a classic recording. Brookmeyer plays great counterpoint lines, something you seldom hear.

J.J. Johnson Proof Positive has been pretty huge for me.

What a great album. Thanks for mentioning it. I found the LP on discogs marketplace, and had it converted to high resolution digital. Amazing playing!

Curtis Fuller - Blues-ette. Haruki Murakami wrote a book called _After_Dark_ where the main character is a trombonist heavily influenced by Curtis Fuller, and this album in particular.

Heck yeah, man! That was one the first LPs I ever owned. Was ecstatic when it got released on CD (2004? 2005?).

What would you all suggest as a good Robin Eubanks album? I'm personally partial to Dave Holland - Prime Directive, but all the Dave Holland Quintet/Sextet albums with Chris Potter and Steve Nelson are pretty good!
