Is a salary of $2100 month ($25,200/year) [+ room and board] considered "good money" these days?
Is medical care included?

Yes. It is. It prepares for all those jobs that pay with money from the door.

Remember, you also get room and board while on the ship. You may even get uniforms if needed. And medical care from the ship's Surgery.

But you don't have to pay for it.
Want a suite? that's on your dime.

Don't misunderstand me. If I could, I would, no problem. I'm just taking advantage of the posts to make a joke (?) or two.

The pay in some nightclubs hasn’t gone up since I played in them in the 60s.

If you can stash all your stuff at your parent's garage while you are gone and not have to pay rent/utilities/insurance and so forth, that pay is not so bad. But if you still have a land based life, it's not so great. But as an econ major in college, I can say that supply and demand is a real thing. If there were 20 qualified trombonists and 30 ships trying to hire them, the pay might be $2k a week. But if there are 1,000 trombonists looking for any paying gig and 30 ships to hire them, the pay goes down. So the solution if for everyone to quit playing, except me. Then I can have my choice of gigs.

I thought ships were a great thing to do after college, and I also used to do an odd contract when nothing much was going on at home. I didn't get rich financially, but I did get to see the world doing it. I don't miss the shared inside cabins, but I do miss the travel...
