George Roberts

Post by Savio »

Today I sit down a take a beer. Spring is around the corner, kids are doing well at school and are happy, wife got a new safe job in the community, I have my Conn bass trombones next to me......

And I listen this:

It can't be any better!

George himself said: "I want to be Urbie Green, but an octave lower."

Does anyone know of any players around today playing like Mr. Robert's. There's simply not enough lyrical bass bone playing like this!

Max Siegel is a different kind of player, but he plays with much more subtlety than you're used to hearing from bass bone players. He'll be at ATW this year.

Will he be performing at atw? I live in the DC area so it's a short drive.

Speaking of George, I noticed a while back that his records aren't available on Spotify like they used to be. Anybody have any other places were one can listen to Meet Mr. Roberts and Bottoms up? With his sextet.

This was the turning point in my life, when I heard this 1958 Billy May recording of "Big Fat Brass". I was blown away by Roberts' pedal F's and G's.
