Alessi Seminar 2019?

Post by Bach5G »

Any info out there about the 2019 Alessi Seminar?

All I could find on the Net - a brief comment on E Shinn’s site - said it had been cancelled.

Assuming it is going ahead, is it back in Eugene?

Peter Peter Ellefson, at Indiana University, one of the former organizers confirmed that it has shuttered—in the U.S. at least. I’ll see if I can get him to chime in.

It’s certainly not shuttered. From what I’ve heard, it’s just happening in China and Italy now.

Hello and nice to be part of the trombone chat. The Alessi Seminar in the United States will not be happening for the foreseeable future because of a major change in my NYP schedule. There are plans to bring it back to the Washington state area in summer of 2022 or 2023. More info to come on this. In the meantime, I will be continuing my traditional seminar format in various Chines cities annually and every other year in the beautiful area of Piemonte Italy. Info to follow soon at alessiseminarasia.com and for 2020 alessiseminar.it Thanks for your interest

As I have often stated and truly believe, the Alessi Seminar is the most informative and valuable experience available for anyone seeking to play trombone at the highest level. If this describes you, I urge you to attend wherever and whenever Mr. Alessi holds his seminar. It changed my life as a player and as a teacher.

I'll echo what Peter Ellefson said - the Alessi Seminar is a game-changing event for your playing. Also, to answer the question about languages at the Italian Seminar, I was a participant at the first seminar in Italy. The Masterclasses were 100% in English, with some Italian translation going on for the few participants who weren't fluent in English. I will say, though, that one of my favorite non-musical memories from that seminar was the "United Nations" feel at the meals, where in addition to English and Italian, you could hear conversations in German, Swedish, Norwegian, Portuguese and a few phrases in Japanese and Mandarin. Most of the European participants were fluent in several languages. They have changed the location since I was there, but we had done a runout concert to Fosano, where they hold the event now. It's a beautiful small city, with lots of historical architecture. Milan and Turin are not far from there, and if you have time to check out northern Italy while there, I would suggest a day in Limone, Piedmont (sorry, couldn't spell the Italian name for the region). That's where the seminar was the year I was there - a really charming ancient town with cobblestone streets and the site of what appeared to be a fantastic ski hill. The French border is only a short distance away, as is Monaco and the Italian/French Riviera. Fantastic area to visit, with the Alps and the Mediterranean all relatively close by car or train.

The Southeast Trombone Symposium is a great event. I have been twice in the last 4 years. While it may not quite have the name recognition of the Alessi Semina, Mr. Alessi himself was a faculty member last summer. They have half of the NY Phil section as regular faculty and other big names like Brian Hecht and Paul Pollard as well. If you want to go to that as a non-auditor this year, you better hurry as the audition deadline is Friday.
