TromboneChat Outage (& future plans)
Hey Chatters!
Yesterday we had an outage, as some of you are doubtless aware. I'll keep it very brief. Our host basically shut things down because we're using too many resources (CPU cycles, particularly). We've been working on a plan to jump ship to a better service which will serve our needs. I've already secured a new server - we'll just need to plan the move, test it, and then go live.
Until then, we may experience regular outage dependent upon usage and other factors. Upgrading our account and staying on our current server will be very expensive and not a wise long-term strategy.
And I COULD host the site on my home server but that seems like a very bad idea. Stay tuned.
Thank you!

Thanks for the update and, particularly, the hard work you and the team do.

I would be glad to support the site with a small donation every year. I bet others would too.
I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are still missing!

Why not allow ads to help pay for the site?

I don't know about anybody else but I really appreciate forums without ads.

Go over to Tubenet to see how bad advertising can be on a forum. It is not only annoying, but also gives a really unserious look.

If advertising is not an option, then how does the forum raise the revenue to prevent another outage?

Many of us would be happy to contribute a little money to keep this community going.norbie2018 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 07, 2018 2:03 pm If advertising is not an option, then how does the forum raise the revenue to prevent another outage?

True, but it depends on how it's done. The advertisements on Dave Werden's Euphonium-Tuba Forum are unobtrusive and relevant to the forum.cozzagiorgi wrote: ↑Wed Nov 07, 2018 1:47 pm Go over to Tubenet to see how bad advertising can be on a forum. Re: TromboneChat Outage (& future plans)
Folks,
Thanks for the support. Needless to say, we're working on it on the back end. We are going to try to migrate the site to our new server space as quickly as possible - I don't know how long that will take from today. I will be setting up a PayPal account or similar to accept donations, which are not compulsory.
In the meantime, expect the site to probably go down every evening, since at this point we're apparently over our allotted resource usage by roughly 50% daily. So it'll probably go down when we're over, and then somewhere around midnight EST it'll come on again. Sorry for the convenience.
One thing you can rest assured upon - I will always keep everyone apprised of what's actually going on, and this site will be good and healthy, regardless of donations, etc. They're helpful, to be sure, but I will keep the site going regardless.
Also, thanks to the team for working on all of this stuff. Lots happening behind the scenes.
