Jimmy Cleveland
I was listening to Sonny Rollins’ Sonnymoon for Two and was impressed by the trombone soloist. I thought maybe Curtis Fuller but, after some digging, it turned out to be Jimmy Cleveland. I knew the name but can’t say I was familiar with his work. Alexa found the album Jimmy Cleveland and his All Stars. Nice player, good record. Worth adding to the playlist.

Way, way under-recognized! I don't know much of his work, but really dig it.

If you think Jimmy Cleveland is under-recognized, you must not have been around when he was working. Jimmy was widely regarded as one of the best trombonists around. And boy did he get a boatload of work.

I wasn’t around - age or location - when he was working.

Well, no, I wasn't "around"when he was working, although I'd be interested in information concerning his peak working/recording years...and more importantly, public awareness of same, as compared with deep trombone cognoscenti. You don't often see him on the usual TromboneChat discussions of great jazz and commercial players from his time. JJ? Watrous? Nash? Fuller? Fontana? Rosolino? Green? They get constant play -- and deservedly so...but Cleveland, not so much. I'd love to be proven wrong re general awareness of Cleveland's work, and if this thread increases knowledge - for me, and for all - of his work, all the better still!
