Rejano mute bass trombone fit

Hi all,

I had been using the old model of the bremner shhhh mute on my bass trombone for well over 10 years until finally all the foam completely wore out and it was no longer usable.
I bought the new model Shhhhh mute which has a different shape to the old one and has cork instead of foam around the top where it sits in the bell of the instrument.

I feel overall the old version was superior, but the main thing that's driving me crazy is the mute simply doesn't stay stuck in place. Constantly falls out when used and some particular notes if played loud send the thing a few feet forward by force. I can't stand it, I've tried different instruments and products on the cork to help it stick and nothing has worked. I've been considering trying to "re foam" my old one, but someone mentioned to me the Rejano mutes are similar to the bremner in terms of how they play, and from a quick look the design looks much more suited to staying in the bell during use.

Anyone who has a rejano practice mute for bass can you confirm if it stays in while playing? I'd like real world testimony on this particular aspect before I commit to purchase.

I bought a Rejano bass mute about two weeks ago used. Stays perfectly fit in my Shires bass bell when I am playing.

Love my Rejano muted and have had zero issues with fit except with one of my bells.

I purchased a brand new R4 bell and the Rejano mute would not stay in due to the lacquer on the inside of the bell flair. The Rejano mute has like this squishy synthetic thing around the mute instead of traditional foam or corks.

Thanks for the reply. I'm on a bach, I have no idea if the lacquer is the problem but the "new" style shhhhhh mute won't stay in my main 50b or my bach up one. Both bells are quite different.... not sure if the lacquer (or lack there of) in the inside is the problem. I have no experience with Rath stuff, are their bells lacquered differently to other brands? The other brands you have where it stays in, could I expect a similar style of finish in my bach bells do you think?

I had a corp Bach 42 and had no issues with fit. They used to ask what horn you were purchasing the mute for and they can make the mute to fit the brand horn you have.

The Rejano stay in my bass bells pretty well. Never had an issue with falling out or stability. Only issue is getting them back out - the plastic tends to be a little slippy to me.

I used to own one of those. In the first edition of those mutes, that mute was sold as usable for bass trombone and french horn. If, in the current edition where they redesigned the trombone versions, the french horn version didn't change, you might be able to get one of those and then you've got a new version of what you had.
