Yamaha Small Bore Leadpipes

Hello All,
This is just a heads up. I’m working with O'Malley Brass in Chicago to make leadpipe options for players using any of the small bore Yamaha horns (897Z, 891Z). They are copying the sleeve/threads and will be able to make threaded leadpipes for players looking to try other options. Stay tuned.

Ooh, that'll be nice! I wonder if they can do the same for the Yamaha YSL-882OR, and the YSL-882? Both of those are set up for removable leadpipes, but they only came with one, and no other leadpipes have ever been released.

Thanks for the shout-out, Luke. I attached a picture of our pipe next to the original Yamaha pipe. It is a drop-in replacement for the original Yamaha LA pipe, but with an adjusted mouthpiece insertion depth.

David: We should be able to do that. Let me see if I can get a hold of one of the Yamaha Large Bore threaded leadpipe collars to copy. We are growing our stable of leadpipes and would love to have more options available.

David, with Kanstul and Brass Lab having folded, having O'Malley as another maker for leadpipes would be welcomed by everyone I think. I've been waiting anxiously for many months now for a pipe I ordered from a respected company and I think that just shows that the market could use another source, too. Absolutely no beef on my part that I'm waiting, that's just the nature of the maker being very good and the demand being very high.

Those two piece leadpipes look an awful lot like newer 3B pipes -- I think one of the holy grails would be to have an "easy" solution for people who want to use different pipes in their 3Bs. But the problem of course is that some are one piece setups and some are two piece.

Another pipe people might want to experiment with is the Conn altos.

I went to check out the new leadpipe for the 891Z today. There is quite a difference between the two. In the video I play the standard LA first then the new version from O’Malley Brass that we can hopefully call the CH (Chicago). You can guess which one I prefer .

I am excited to see what is offered. I currently use the NY pipe on my 891z. The LA pipe feels better to me but in play tests, everyone picked the NY Pipe as sounding better. Something that both feels good and sounds good would be nice.

That's just an Old sign we had around. One of our Olds Super double horns keeps it company.

Thanks, Harrison. We are ramping up operations and hope to be able to provide as much as possible to the world of brass instruments.

The Yamaha pipes are a little different than the King pipes. King pipes have a gap like a trumpet-style leadpipe/receiver set up, while the Yamaha pipes are designed with no gap to mimic a traditional leadpipe while offering the consistency of a machined mouthpiece receiver.

King pipes could be made to be press-fit.

The handful of 891Z players we've worked with all seem to prefer the LA pipe. Once we get production of the threaded collar dialed in, we should be able to install various different smallbore pipes into the Yamaha receivers.

I just came back from O’Malley Brass and they now have a great leadpipe option for the 891Z that plays focused without being restrictive. It’s essentially the LA leadpipe with a more standard insertion depth for the mouthpiece. This to me centers the sound and pitch a bit more over the pipe that comes with the horn. If you’re looking at trying out something different for your 891Z this is a great option. I’ll have some videos posted soon with the difference. Hit them up!
