Actually one of my favorite pieces of practice gear: a nice cushy drummer throne that I have setup so tall that my feet barely touch the ground (I’m 6’3 so it’s up high). It disengages my back and allows me to sit up straight and completely relaxed without tension.

I practically always practice when standing, but have often thought that at least partly have a chair would be more realistic to actual outside playing situations.

I practice mostly sitting because I have back issues and the bass trombone is quite heavy for the small me.
It happens that I practice the small bore standing sometimes.

I prefer to play on a tall stool. Sitting down in a regular chair tends to restrict my breathing.

Me, too. Both. Too bad there's no "both" option in the poll.

Sometimes I perform sitting down. Sometimes I perform standing up. I should practice both ways, shouldn't I?

Practice how you intend to perform! A band director friend noticed a student in a solo and ensemble kicked off her shoes in the middle of her solo.. she was going to leave the room without them and he asked her if she practiced barefoot. “Yes? How did you know?” He then pointed out her shoes.

I often wonder if some of my dumb issues on gigs are from practicing standing up too much compared to the stage seating. Just makes breathing and posture different and I also tend to move and walk more than I should.

Cheers,

On trombone I perform mostly sitting. With voice, I can't remember the last time I performed sitting. So, I practice voice standing and trombone sitting.

I do both, but feel best when standing. But the fact is that most of us have to sit when we play in different ensembles? Guess not too many of us are full-time solo performers yet? I try to straighten my back when I sit, so hopefully it will go well. I try not to sit like a banana. :)

Standing probably 99% of the time. I stand when playing. Exception is if practicing with grandson and or daughter for an ensemble…everybody sitting is easier to do for some reason.

Trumpet is my main practice horn. If I’m good on it, trombone, euph, and French horn are good too, with my tuba being the exception. Readjusting to that mouthpiece takes about 15 to 20 minutes of play time.

Today I practiced standing up because I couldn't play it sitting down. It wasn't long before I realized that I couldn't do it sitting down. For some reason I had to stand to play it even halfway. And I realized that I almost always have to practice difficult things standing up, for some reason. Anyone else have that problem?

There is some recent research in classroom education that purports that standing is more conducive to thinking than sitting. The research, however, is based on surveys of students, post lessons, reporting their perception of how much they were thinking.

Also the researcher had a preset idea that his methods were good and that thinking is the goal of every educational situation. so grain of salt???

Ideally it should be the same from the the waist up.

I can only really speak for the gigs I play, but I end up with a mix of performances where I'm standing the whole time, sitting the whole time, or going back and forth. I will practice sitting or standing, depending on my mood and what else I'm doing later that day. If I'm going to be rehearsing or performing standing I might practice sitting, just to balance things out.

How come the poll only has the two options and not one for both?
