Emergency Spit Valve Repair - Ear Plugs

Post by Mamaposaune »

I am going to start keeping one of these in each of my cases. Foam earplugs, cut into quarters, for an emergency spit valve cork repair.
The downside being that the outer slide has to be removed to empty the spit, but it's still better than having a hole in the slide crook!

Nice!!

The erasers from mechanical pencils work well too in a pinch!

I have some thin stretchy rubber from an exercise band, sort of balloon type thickness. On occasion I've tied that over the cork to get a better seal temporarily. Probably a finger from a tubber glove would work too.

I had the solder joint on my spit valve let go on a gig. Entire lever skidded across thee stage. I used a rubber plug that we used to protect large holes during electroplating (about 3/16" diameter) until I could get the slide to a shop for resoldering.

Wow! What did you do for the rest of the gig?
This makes me think I should carry some masking tape, too!

I actually carry disposable earplugs that are cut to fit in the spit valve hole, incase the solder pops all the way off. Thankfully I haven’t had to use it yet in an emergency, but glad to know it’s in my mute bag.

Actually, on this gig I had a second trombone in my trunk and just used it. But the plating plugs found a home in my accessory bag afterward.
