Flugabone cases

I got my flugabone with one of those huge chunky solid cases with no parallel sides. It's a mess and I hate to take it anywhere.

So what do you all use as a flugabone case? Does a double trumpet case do it? I hate to spend a lot of money on a case when I only paid $150 for the instrument. Just to clarify, I've got the Olds version with the 8" bell, but they should all fit into the same cases, roughly.

Mine doesn't really leave the house. But it fits well enough in a trombone gig bag.

Mine came in a Protec Mellophone case. I also hate taking it places, but the case isn't horrible. I often carry it vertically.

One day I'll send mine to Sweeney to get the whole overhaul with the cut bell, but until then I'll settle for this. I've also heard of people just tossing the flugabone in a backpack. That's definitely a cheap, but less safe option.

Yeah, I've got some cave-man unbranded version of that thing. Heavy, bulky, and no parallel faces (bell and mouthpiece end faces are technically parallel, but who's counting?), which drives me a little crazy for some reason.

A student of mine has one of the Sweeney ones with the cut bell and the flight case provided. Such a slick and incredibly well done set-up. Though overkill for the thread, but totally amazing

I have a duffel bag that is about the length of the horn. I put a few layers of folded foam inside for protection. I don't go out with it much but it does work. Note that mine isn't really a true Flugabone, it's a Couesnon bass flugelhorn in Eb (with really odd tuning: the 3rd valve is a half tone below 1+2).

That's the old Belgian 3rd valve tuning. It helps with low F, E, C, and B (2+3 for F and C and 1+3 for E and B). In all cases the notes are less sharp than 1+3 and 1+2+3 in the 2-1-3 semitone tuning.

Older 5 valve tubas often tuned the fifth valve to two whole steps. It makes more sense for a 5-valve instrument than either a flat half-step or flat whole-step, but it also makes for some weird fingerings when you start plunging into the abyssal zone.

The Protec Marching Baritone case is a better fit, smaller in the bell area. Same weird shape though.

I'm not sure why the specs are measuring the same thing on their website but they do look similar, and the marching baritone case seems slimmer.

My flugabone has a 8" bell though, so needing a case that fits a 10.5" or 11" bell seems like overkill. I might look into those Cronkhite ones because I know myself and I won't be shelling out 1-2k on a flugabone restoration any time soon

gig bag for a british-style tenorhorn fits really well. I have the soundwear which is really nice and very protective.
