Leadpipe Can't Be Pulled

I took my 2b jiggs to Dillons to have the leadpipe pulled. The tech said he'll try, but he rarely is successful pulling pipes. Well, he tried and said it didn't budge. I really want the pipe pulled. I have a replacement pipe ready to go. What other options do I have?

Get a new upper tube and have the whole slide rebuilt around it.

Could be expectation management, but "rarely" doesn't sound great

Anyway, King parts are pretty cheap so get a new tube AND cork barrel, and then you can have the original or new setups swapped with a single solder joint

Are you getting a removable leadpipe system installed? That’s a different beast altogether. If yes, then you need to order a longer inner tube and have the mouthpiece receiver part of the leadpipe (those King leadpipes are actually two separate components) turned down on a lathe so that it fits inside the new inner tube.

Try another tech.

I know a tech who "usually" gets them out and another who "always" gets them out.

What does "successfully" mean in this case. My tech said he "could not promise my pipe to come out in one piece" and it didn't, but I said it did not need to come out in one piece. It was a successful removal in my book, but this pipe was useless, it was rotten. It was a very old New York Bach 6 model VII. Think the leadpipe I replaced it with was from the Hornguys.

I've seen Landress brass in NYC post videos / pictures of pulling a trombone leadpipe, so maybe try contacting them. There are also many techs that you could box up the slide and send it to.

I agree! The times I've had it done on an older instrument took patience and time.

There is almost NEVER a guarantee that a leadpipe will come out intact!
Especially if it's in an older horn!

Time and use fuses the EXTREMELY thin leadpipe to the inside of the inner tube.

Sometimes you can peel the inner tube away from the leadpipe, necessitating a new inner tube, but that too is never a guarantee that the leadpipe will survive!

Especially if it's in an older horn!

I didn't say it was a guarantee. But to say it's "rare" for a leadpipe to come out intact is just plain false. I'm sure I have at least a 90% success rate. It can take a great deal of patience if it's an old horn, though.
