Wide cup diameter* shallow cup mouthpiece recommendations

Post by Johntrom »

I've currently been playing on a 48A Yamaha mouthpiece for a couple of years after figuring out that a wide yet shallow mouthpiece suits me but in the back of my mind I've been in pursuit of something equally shallow but wider.

I tried a 51B but it was overall a worse compromise as I didn't like the deeper cup and bigger throat but I liked the WIDER CUP DIAMETER* so I wondered if anyone knows of a mouthpiece that's along the lines of being equivalent to like a 50A? Modular combo recommendations welcome.

Bore: 5.80 mm
Cup depth: Very Shallow (E)
Shank 1 (S-shank)
... or
JK Exclusive Trombone 9D S1
Cup Inner diameter: 25.00 mm
Bore: 6.00 mm
Cup depth: Semi shallow (D)
Shank 1 (S-shank)
... or
JK Exclusive Trombone 10D S1
Cup Inner diameter: 24.50 mm
Bore: 6.00 mm
Cup depth: Semi shallow (D)

Used to be available at Dillon's but they seem to not carry them anymore. You might check.

The Marcinkiewicz 9 is a 26mm rim with a pretty shallow cup. I think they still do two week trials if you send them an email. Check the website.

Nobody else even comes close to the variety of stuff that I make. Just ask, I probably have it in stock.

Doug Elliott is definitely the best option for an unusual request like Johntrom's

If I understand the OP correctly, they're actually looking for a larger cup diameter rather than a wider/thicker rim. My first thought on seeing the title of the thread was "Rudy Mück!"

You are correct, I did in fact mean a larger cup diameter. Thank you for picking up on that.

The 48A is not a super wide mouthpiece to begin with. It’s a 25.25mm (I have one). The thing about it is that’s it’s mainly an Alto piece. It has a very very tight throat. 5.32mm. You won’t easily find something with that small a throat and a wider rim unless you get something made custom. All the pieces I know that have a larger rim and shallow cup will also have a more open throat, closer to 6mm (huge difference). A Greg Black 6C is about a 25.4mm with a shallow cup but the throat will be more open. Is this for an alto trombone?

Yamaha 48A could be a very small mouthpiece, also for alto. The throat is so small, I had difficulty to make air go through that tight throat. Do you use it on alto or tenor? If we discuss about tenor playing could be good idea to consider right cup and throat size to match the instrument.

I’ve tried my Yamaha 48A on my tenor trombone, which has a Bach .509 slide. It’s unusable. I like the rim size but the throat and backbore don’t work for me.

Jon, 48, 51D, 50A, those are all different diameters. You need to discover what rim you prefer, and then you can narrow down the options for the other factors.

Otherwise the advice here won't really be all that specific or useful.

I use a Hammond 10m small shank. I custom ordered it to be in standard weight. It's very comfortable. Great piece. I play it on a 2b jiggs.
