Looking for mouthpiece similar to Olds 3 but with standard diameter

Post by nordholm »

I've been playing an Olds Super for a number of years with an Olds 3. Recently I bought a King 2B, and the Olds 3 works quite well with it except that it wobbles slightly in the mouthpiece receiver because of the 3's slightly-smaller-than-normal diameter. This doesn't seem to affect how it plays, but I wonder if there is a similar mouthpiece with a standard diameter to better fit the 2B.

Looking forward to hear your thoughts.

Lots of possibilities.

Bach 7C should be close (Get a Faxx 7C for a more economical one)
The King M31 was usually supplied with this instrument if you can find one (no longer made).
Schilke 47 might be a good alternate.

Good luck.

Olds 3 mouthpiece: ~24.25mm Cup I.D.; 6.15mm Throat; small Olds taper Shank

Sort of similar standard Small Shank mouthpieces (many choices - but all different from the Olds 3):
• Bach 12 or 12C (24.5mm Cup / 5.85mm Throat)
• Bach 11 or 11C (24.7mm Cup / 5.85mm Throat)
• Giardinelli 6D (24.5mm Cup / 5.95mm Throat)
• King M21 (~24.4mm Cup / 5.85mm Throat)
• Schilke 45 (~24.38mm Cup / 5.95mm Throat)
• Schilke 45B (~24.30mm Cup / 5.95mm Throat)
• Schilke 46 (~24.54mm Cup / 5.95mm Throat)
• Denis Wick 12CS (~24.7mm Cup / 6.10mm Throat)
• Yamaha 45C2-12C (24.26mm Cup / 5.85mm Throat)
• Yamaha 46C2 (24.59mm Cup / 5.85mm Throat)

Thanks. I think I'll see if I can borrow a few different ones to try.

Authentic King M31 mouthpiece
Conn 3 should also work well, though slightly larger than the Olds 3

If you want to use an Olds 3 in the 2B............
Been there, done that.
One layer of aluminum tape on the shank stops the wobbling and corrects the insertion depth.

If you'll send me a Private Message with your address, I'll be happy to mail you a short piece of aluminum tape off of my roll.

Thanks for the tip and the offer. Very generous of you. I won't ask you to mail any to me (in Denmark). Looks like I can get something equivalent locally that's pretty cheap. :good:
