Leadpipe Holder
Does anyone know of a good accessory for lead pipes to hold them? Are there any recommended cases? Also, I have seen the Edwards lead pipes come in clear plastic tubes. Just looking for some leads, thanks.

I think somebody talked about using lengths of 1/2" PVC pipe. I don't remember if it was on here or on TTF.

Re: Leadpipe Holder
PVC pipe is great, I'm not sure what I got last time I went but I picked up some that have threads that seem to work with Shires *and* Conn leadpipes... in other words, you don't just put the pipe in... but the threads actually screw into the PVC pipe itself so it doesn't move around. Need to check out Home Depot again for more of those...

Re: Leadpipe Holder
Not sure if it would work, but the Protec sax neck bag might be right up your alley. Not sure which size, if any, would fit a lead pipe(s)

Re: Leadpipe Holder
Kanstul made their protectors from 1/2" Schedule 80 PVC pipe. (Available at Lowe's)
A short length of a junked inner slide tube also makes a great protector. Maybe check with your local tech for one ?
The auto parts store sells 5/8" heater hose by the foot. That works good, too.
Or, you can dig deep into your pocket for one of these: https://osmun.com/trombone-leadpipe-pouch/

Thanks for the replies. I have considered the PVC route, however, I know I have seen some nice transparent holders (like a test tube). I might go the Osmun route, that case looks nice. The reason I ask, I had a set of leadpipes in an old Tupperware container that disappeared so I don't want a repeat once I get the new replacements.

Anyone know the correct tap size to thread the inside of the schedule 80 pvc (like the ones from kanstul)?

Actually, .571 is the valve bore, though their marketing materials are admittedly quite confusing with regards to that. Unfortunately, I can't answer the question about their threads

Re: Leadpipe Holder
Hi Steve, I'll bring a set of calipers to the next practice.. for the .571, we would probably have to use 1/2" schedule 40 instead of 80 (it has a larger inner diameter). I'll take a shot at measuring the thread spacing too...

The look of the Osmun pouch reminded me of a cigar case. I’m not sure of the dimensions of leadpipes ( I just plug and play ) or of larger cigars ( I only go for smaller perfectos, but I know cigars can get very long ). Also small Pelican and Otter cases of some model may work as well as the more slim profile pistol cases!

I'll see if I can get the numbers off the plastic pipes that kanstul used for their leadpipe sleeves.

The ones that came with the Kanstul 1555 are 1/2 schedule 80 and the threads are M16x1.5mm (in case anyone wants to make their own). The length of the two "factory" storage tubes I have are 8 7/8" and 8". I'm so far making mine at 9" as the longest leadpipe I have so far is 8 5/8".

Re: Leadpipe Holder
I think all of Kanstul's leadpipe collars are the same size and thread, which is the same as Shires. The collar threading is wider than the pipe will ever be, so all leadpipes fit in the same tubes that kanstul made.

Cool. The ones I'm making are identical to the ones I got with the Kanstul, so they should hold anything but BASS leadpipes for Kanstul and Shires.

Re: Leadpipe Holder
I love finding projects like these! This is a creative solution, and easy enough to DIY in a few minutes. I had some 1/2" schedule 80 PVC laying around, and so I gave this a whirl. I used an Edwards/Getzen threaded .508 leadpipe as a test, and for that collar, the M16x1.5mm turned out to be too small. The closest tap I had on hand that seemed to work was an M18x1.5mm. I'll be making more of these as I grow my collection of horns/leadpipes again.

I made some out of PVC and cut them to size. (Sometimes I just want to be cheap. ) I used friction-fit caps, glued on one end. I left the other end un-glued. I also drilled holes at each end for ventilation.

Re: Leadpipe Holder
Yes, threaded for kanstul and shires. I used 1/2 schedule 80 like kanstul did. The downside of 1/2 pvc is they won't fit .547 pipes. They will handle .500, .508, .525,....
I'm planning to make some using a bit larger pvc for my .547 pipes.

You may want to consider Schedule 40 pipe. The OD is the same but the wall thickness is thinner The wall thickness of Schedule 80 1/2" pipe is about 0.140" while the wall thickness of Schedule 40 1/2" pipe is about 0.110"jbeatenbough wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 9:43 am Yes, threaded for kanstul and shires. Yes, something like that... I originally was duplicating the ones that I had that came from Kanstul - and they were 1/2 sched 80. Can't tell the difference in the ones they made and the copies I made. This was fine for my 1555.
Now for the T47, I need to make something slightly bigger. I'll take a leadpipe with me to the store and see what I can find... I want them to be strong enough to make it really hard to bend a foot long piece, but still fit a .547 pipe inside. I'll post what I find.

Ah shucks, most of the pipes I have are 547 and larger. That may have been where your market disconnect was. Seems like threaded pipes are more common on large bores & basses than they are on small bores.

Re: Leadpipe Holder
I used schedule 80 for the .500 pipes, but I'm using schedule 40 1/2 for the .547. ID is about .560 as I measure it.
I know Kanstul also used schedule 80 for their .500, because I have one. I previously had a BP42 .547 and it was in a schedule 40 1/2 when I got it, but I'm not sure it was from the manufacturer. That is all I have personal knowledge about.
The schedule 40 walls are not as thick, but still a 10" piece of 1/2 sch40 is very stiff, so I think it give pretty good protection...you would have to work pretty hard to bend a leadpipe inside one.

Re: Leadpipe Holder
You mention above that the Kanstul small bore threads are M16x1.5... just looking at the numbers, and given that 11/16-18 is correct for the large bores, I'd guess that the official spec on the small threads might in fact be 5/8-18.jbeatenbough wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 9:03 am I've been told that the shires .547 pipes are threaded 11/16-18. (Over this sort of length the metric version would certainly be close enough to function.)

Re: Leadpipe Holder
I think you may be correct. I've noticed that the ones for small bore that I did at M16x1.5 are a little snug screwing the pipes in... They work, but I don't think it was the exactly correct thread. Good thing I wasn't tapping a slide

Re: Leadpipe Holder
I ended up buying several of the Edwards clear acrylic holders to replace the pvc ones I made. Their threading is better than my attempts to hand tap pvc, and it's nice that one size fits all of their pipes, so you don't need different tubes for small bore, large bore, bass, etc. Edwards sells these for $12, which seems pretty reasonable if you don't want to DIY the pvc route.
One tip - I found that 22mm vinyl end caps (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08HHSZ1V3) work perfectly to fit over the non-threaded end of the Edwards tubes. Not a critical add-on, but nice to prevent dust/debris, depending on how you store or transport them. For long-term storage, the caps also fit over the leadpipe collar after it is threaded into the tube.
Here's a couple of pics of what those look like, if you haven't seen them:

Re: Leadpipe Holder
Did I understand correctly, that ALL Shires have the same thread size, but need different PVC pipes (with different I.D.) because of the bore size?
I am looking for something like this for Shires .525, .547 and .562
John are you still making these things to sell?
Thanks!
