Playing ballads on bass bone

Post by bigbandbone »

When the COVID19 pandemic shut us all down One of the things I decided to concentrate on was playing ballads in the bass trombone range. GR made it sound easy, but it really is not. Breath control, intonation, and phrasing can be difficult.
To that end I started transcribing old standards in the bass bone range and using them as studies.
When possible I practice them in 2 and sometimes 3 octaves.
Here's my most recent transcription. My One And Only Love. A big band I'm playing 3rd bone in plays this tune as a vocal with a bass bone feature in the middle. I just had to write the whole tune out. And because I'm playing a single valve 72H I have to do the whole thing pulled to E. A great study piece.

Here’s a resource to help.

It has demo tracks of George playing as well.

Playing ballads and old popular songs in the low range on the bass trombone is great practice and you can learn them in various keys to make it even more useful.
