Charlie Vernon up close
Here's a great video of Charlie, unaccompanied, and up close.

That's really outstanding. Charlie has the BEST legato and consistency in his sound.

Beautiful!
Interesting to see the use of slide vibrato!

Lovely.
Slide vib is nice anyway, and in this context it's the option most musically/mechanically analogous to string vib, so why not!

Doug, is CV a MHP with a more-horizontal-than-vertical pivot - unless the video angle is confusing me - or a VHP whose P just happens not to appear VH?Doug Elliott wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 2:07 am That's really outstanding. Charlie has the BEST legato and consistency in his sound.

Exactly. He's a IIIB in Reinhardt terms, and his pivot is almost horizontal. That is what stabilizes everything and helps his playing to be so smooth - you don't see him drastically dropping his jaw or anything like that. It's a pretty large amount of motion but it's very consistent and smooth.
I've known Charlie since the 70's so I've been watching his chops a long time.

I like his playing so much. Also his humor and human attitude. There is some teaching videos somewhere on the net with him. We can learn a little bit about the Chicago "Song and wind" way". I can't say I understand all but some of it is to have an image of what you want to sound like. Anyway, it's beautiful what he do, and in the orchestra it's amazing. Thats definitely teamwork. I just listen the Beethoven 9nt symphony. Amazing! There is also a swing /jazz / christmas video with Charlie Vernon; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJxb6n-hoUQ
I have to say I listen a lot of music on the web. Mostly because I want inspiration to practice and there is so many good people/ensembles to listen out there. Here is also one that gives me inspirations

I think it gives everyone inspiration to practice. Listen how soft they can play.

I don't know much about embouchure Doug, but he has a lot more of lower lip inside the mouthpiece? And yes he moves a lot. And sound fantastic!Doug Elliott wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 11:26 am Exactly. Not actually more lower lip, it just sort of looks that way from the outside.

Beautiful! ...music!
Can't imagine hearing it any other way on trombone.
(And, fascinating to see how his face is adjusting as he plays. )

It’s a great reminder to let your body move to where the note is most resonant, and that position may not be where the textbook says.

And how many people teach "move as little as possible" which is nice in theory but totally wrong.
