Very sad. A great artist who contributed a lot to the jazz world.

Aww man, that's such a shame. Definitely one of my favorite pianists. As much as I love the Return to Forever stuff, his work with the Akoustic Band trio, with John Patitucci and Dave Weckl, might be my favorite work of his. The level of interaction between the three of them is so seamless, it's like they're three people all playing one instrument together.

Joe Alessi was due to premiere a trombone concerto by Chick in June of this year, before COVID happened....

RIP Chick. I loved the Akoustic Band albums with John Patitucci and Dave Weckl, and saw him live withe Origin group in the early 2000s with Steve Davis on trombone.

First album of his I had was Now He Sings, Now He Sobs. It took me like a month to make it past Matrix, the second tune, 'cause I just kept playing it on repeat.

But yeah, Light as a Feather, the Return to Forever Stuff, Gary Burton duets, the 80s bands with Weckl, Patittucci, Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale... such a huge and varied output.

Chick dies at 79, and yet somehow Roy Haynes, who was already in his 40s when they recorded Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, is still alive. Go figure.

Chick seemed to like trombonists. Bill Watrous was featured on The Leprechaun album, and Jim Pugh on RTF's Music Magic album.

It was Chick that opened my eyes to Bill Watrous. Before I ever experienced "Spain", my playlist consisted of JJ&Kai, Herb Albert & the TB and Tommy Dorsey.

Besides the fact that Bill did things I never thought possible, that song was fantastic (catchy, complex, rhythmic, every solo was spot-on perfect) and, as I would find out later, played by a Who's Who group of jazz monsters.

RIP Chick.
