Valve trombonists for Gerry Mulligan?
Anyone know who he is? He sounds great, especially for a valve trombone. Any idea why he didnt play slide?

Not a bad thing, just curious if he started out on slide or valve because most don’t start on valves.

Valve trombone was a popular instrument for Latin bands. Also was a way for trumpet or baritone players to get into trombone playing.
Valve trombone offers a few advantages in improvising, especially in this era of stream of notes playing. You can get a lot more facility in fast passages with a valve trombone.
There have been some seriously good valve trombone players in the past. Juan Tizol, Brad Gowans, and Bob Brookmeyer are three greats.

Puccini, Belini and Verdi had the valve trombone in mind in all the music they wrote. Today many opera ochestras do use valve trombones for their music. Valve trombone is a great instrument when played like fex Bob Broomeyer. I did played together with Bob for a month in Sweden with Gugge Hedrenius band, I told him once that I played the clarinett before I started on the trombone. He looki funny on me and said "well, so did I".

Also, but slightly tangential, Kai Winding using a King Trombonium (a sort of Baritone Horn shaped Valve Trombone).
All goes to show that the valve trombone has a place even though slide players tend to look down on it.

There’s a promotional photo of Winding and J.J. Johnson holding trombonia that can be found online. Does anyone know how much they used these horns for performances or recordings?
