I'm looking at a Shilke 55 - 59 mouthpiece on the bay. Is that just a normal 59? What does the 55 represent?
Thanks

Re: Another Shilke question
If it's anything like my 53-59, it's a 55 rim with a 59 cup. Never heard of the 55 rim, that's pretty neat.
Looking at the listing, I'm not sure what it is. My 53-59 has the 53 stamped on the outside of the rim, above the 59 stamping. There's not enough photos to see if there's a 55 stamping on the rim.
Someone more familiar with Schilke boxes could tell us if all the boxes had a number like that before the actual size.

It's a normal 59. Modern Schilke mouthpieces comes in a box with number 55XX. My new short shank 60 came in a box numbered 5560.
If you are, however, looking for a 55-sized piece, Yamaha makes one. I have one currently though I had to order it and waited for 3 months since it is so unpopular.
Below is the Yamaha 55 compared to a Schilke 60.

Would a Yamaha 55 essentially be their 3G sized piece?

I think that would be their 54. The 55 is slightly larger than a 3G and the cup is rather funnel shaped than bowl shaped.FullPedalTrombonist wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2020 4:58 pm Would a Yamaha 55 essentially be their 3G sized piece?
I tried a 54 and my whole experience wasn't too impressed with the mouthpiece (and the test horn). I also find 3rd and 6th partial sharper than they should be while using the 55. I suspect 12th partial will be the same but I don't have the range and rarely play up there.

Pretty close to a 3G. Slightly different cup though.FullPedalTrombonist wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2020 4:58 pm Would a Yamaha 55 essentially be their 3G sized piece?
