Significant jazz valve trombonists???

Post by Gary »

Besides Juan Tizol and Bobby Brookmeyer, who are the significant jazz valve trombonists of this era? I can't find squat, either on YouTube or Wikipedia. I would really appreciate a little help. Thanks.

Rob McConnell, Brad Gowans. Stu Williamson, Maynard Ferguson and James Morrison both play(ed) it along with trumpet.

Bob Enevoldsen. He also played tenor sax . Was busy in the LA jazz scene; taught and arranged extensively as well.

Msgr. John Sanders: he played with Lucky Thompson’s band, then Duke Ellington after Juan Tizol left for the final time and stayed with Duke from 54-59 when he left the music business to join the priesthood.

Billy Eckstein was best known as a singer, but he got his start as a valve trombonist and continued to play it periodically throughout his career.

One of my favorite players - on slide or valves, doesn't matter. Great musician!

The first time I heard of him was on some Frank Gambale vids from the 90s (cut straight to his solos since Frank Gambale isn't for everyone!):

Christian Pincock lives up here in Seattle and is a valve trombonist of wide-ranging talents... everything from free improv/jazz, regular jazz, legit stuff, playing an organ thing with his feet while he plays horn, etc. Lots of good stuff on his Youtube channel:

Kiku Collins "Here With Me". She plays a valve bone and trumpet--most notably a trumpet player. Her husband is a "pure" trombone player.
